Introduction

We have redefined many things in our world today, and are still redefining many more. We have redefined marriage, gender, the role of man, women, parents, police, the children, government, and many more. You know what else are being redefined? Sin and the sinners.

In an effort to deny what is undeniable, the world will try to rename or change its meaning. But in spite of how much effort we put in renaming or redefining sin, it is still sin. The consequences of which remain as declared by God.

In this study, I will be comparing God’s definition of sin to the modern day definitions, including that which is used by some popular preachers today.

How God Describes Your Sin

The following are exactly how God defines sin in His Word:

  1. Sin, iniquities – the transgression of God’s law,
  2. Evil
  3. Wickedness
  4. Mischief – injury; damage; evil, whether intended or not.

Isaiah 59:1-4 Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. 3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. 4 None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

How God Describes the Sinners

The following are exactly how God defines the sinners in His Word:

  1. Sinners
  2. Evil doers
  3. the Wicked
  4. The foolish
  5. The workers of iniquities
  6. The bloody and deceitful

Proverbs 15:29 The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

Psalm 26:5 I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked.

Psalm 7:11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.

Psalm 5:5-6 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity. 6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

How the People Describe themselves and their Sins

Contrary to God’s own definition, the people consider themselves as ‘good’. They say they are good people who sometimes make mistakes, bad decisions, or poor choices. The truth is that no one is good. You make bad decisions and choices because you’re bad.

There are many among the popular preachers of our days who lack the courage to speak the Word of God. Rather than declaring the truth of scriptures, they are also echoing the modern-day definitions, affirming how the people describe themselves.

There is No Good in You

Apart from Christ, you can do no good. You might be able to impress some people with some so-called good deeds. But God is not impressed by your sin-tainted righteousness.

Romans 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

If you’re yet to receive Christ, you are still in the flesh. Any good thing, of which you think you’re capable, is as repulsive as filthy rags to God.

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

So you need to stop calling yourself good. Humble yourself before God and He will receive you.

Escape the Wrath of God

For those who have admitted that they are sinners, here is the reason why you need to have your sins washed. Because of the consequences, which is the wrath of God that is prepared for the children of disobedience. Despite how you attempt to redefine your sins, God will punish sin, as He had said in His Word.

Ephesians 5:3-6 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

This is what you need to run from, the lake of fire, eternal separation from God. And that is why you need Jesus. To avoid the eternal judgment of God

Run to Jesus Christ for the Forgiveness of Your Sin

And you can receive Him today. Rather than redefining your sin, call it what God calls it – sin, wickedness. Humble yourself and confess your sin to God. Believe that Christ died and rose again to pay for your sins. God will forgive and justify you on the basis of the work of Christ.

Jesus Christ has paid the price. He offers you free salvation which you must receive by faith.
